I decided to see if my fundamental grinding is paying off and tried to construct some anime heads. I'm really happy with how they came out, but these took a ridiculous amount of trial and error to get looking good. At least when it came to the hair, I think I'm finally starting to 'think 3 dimensionally' or whatever the fuck that means.

You might be mixing me up with another anon. I was working through Xiao Weichun's textbook in earlier threads. The basic idea of construction I learned there is helpful, but not directly when it gets to heads this stylized.
A lot of the trial and error was trying to keep the character consistent when drawing from a new angle, which is something I haven't done before. Discounting skulls, I just haven't really drawn a huge number of heads, so I don't have a good intuition for facial feature placement for the tougher angles.

I did mix you up sorry, I saw heads and lineart and didn't pay attention to the style.
Did you already try Loomis? The template proportions work on many anime heads out of the box, and if not it's pretty easy to adjust them.
This is just my own experience but I found trying to use a box first was counterproductive. Not only is it difficult (for me) to place the sphere inside the box correctly, but I had a tendency to flatten the features. Maybe I will try it again some other time.
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>7869500
I'm not attached to the box, and maybe trying loomis next time is a good shout. I don't really have an established method yet, but I liked the idea of the box, since it was closest to what I was doing with skulls and it sets a clear 'goal' perspective/scale for me at the start that I can shoot for.

And you?
What did you accomplish in a year? Can you make it without the talent of NIHUGOD? Why arent any of you as successful as him? Not even the ones who have been drawing for many more years than him

/ic/ can be fun, sure. Posting your drawings on here is like joining a mosh pit, it can bring a great sense of togetherness, sometimes you'll see a schizo on the floor rambling about talent, sometimes you'll bump into people that post their own stuff, but there's a huge amount of crabs. Ultimately, once you leave the mosh pit, it continues as if you weren't even there. The only people that will remember you will be the crabs and schizos on the floor because they can't escape the pit.
You'll get some responses, but 90 percent of the time it will be useless. Joining a local art community is better in the long run, even though it requires going outside and meeting people.

They do but there's 0 chance they'll ever join one of those groups, and probably 0 chance you'll ever clock one if you come off as even remotely liberal. Cons and even unaffiliated groups self-select hard against liberal groups and liberal friends (lol no that "conservative friend" is not conservative) so unfortunately liberals end up kludging together and create echo chambers wherever they go.

I went to a conservative artist meetup but there was this one weird guy there with long hair and cut marks. He showed me his bizarre gore porn collection of little boys and kept talking about how excited he is for his 3rd bath of the day despite smelling like blood and vomit. I never went back.

People will choose which artists to follow based on their politics and if they find out an artist disagrees with them they'll start saying their art was always bad.

try a new medium or subject matter so you have an excuse as to why it sucks
practice coloring with a pros lineart drawing
trace over something to practice hand-eye coordination, lineart etc.
practice the more solid fundamentals like perspective. if you follow all the steps and use tools like rulers & grids, you can't really mess it up.

Hide's own drawings are mediocre but serviceable. If anything it's essentially a more detailed Loomis course with an anime aesthetic, the simplicity makes it a decent starting point for begs.
You should probably learn basic perspective before starting his course though.

And I first tried to lean gesture from Hampton too and he is legit an atrocious source for begs. He is better revisited once you get somewhat comfortable with drawing. Gestures are actually hard as fuck to pull off, you need to draw dozens and hundreds of them to start getting the feeling and understanding unless you are a talentfag. Try also watching Proko's and Brent Eviston's take on gestures. I watched them all and took bits and pieces from them in my gesture drawings.

It feels more like when you set out to draw something and get it partially right, your brain temporarily learns to translate what you drew into what you actually intended. If someone else drew it you'd be able to see it as shit from the start, but when you draw it yourself you need a break to let the association with what you were aiming for fade before you can see it for what it is. I think what you're really learning isn't how to recognize flaws, it's where you need to be careful to stamp out the flaws early before your eyes have time to adjust to them.
>>
I've been drawing since december 2021. 2 hours a day 3 - 5 days a week depending on how I feel. Recently I've been getting a lot more serious about my drawings and noticed that whenever I'm brainstorming how I'd like to stylize a character I will draw the head then erase it then draw it again, tuning aspects like the eyes, shape, sharpness etc. until it looks like how I want it to is that a bad idea or is this how you're supposed to train style?

I'm not exactly starting from zero as I've drawn as a hobby since I was very young, but I'm still very much a /beg/ because I don't really have a good grasp of the fundamentals. I admittedly don't feel as much of a desire to rapidly learn them all since I mostly like my toon drawings as a supplement to character creation and writing, but recently I tried to draw a bird (the greater lophorina) from a reference after doodling it by memory, and I realized I greatly lack the ability to properly interpret references, as in, I don't think I know what I'm looking at. This is deeply frustrating, as I want to feel confident in what my eyes see. After some research, one could say I suffer from symbol drawing, no? As in, I draw what I *think* I see rather than what is actually there. I did a still life of a crushed can I had and attempted to copy a portrait of Aaron Copland, and then later marked them over (primarily the Copland) digitally (It does not look like Copland, but rather a respectable cafe/dive bar owner), which you can see in the catbox link below. I'm thinking of reading Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain too, if that would be any help to me. Hopefully my shitty phone camera and shitty indoor lighting doesn't completely fuck this up, lol.

The figure on the left was a new approach to a drawing I did before the course; the heads on the right also had the glabella/nose geometry incorrect.
Using what he taught about adopting the glabella as the most important reference point on the head, and not the eye line, made it much easier for me to understand facial geometry

I) Your understanding of the centerline and the torso is a bit off. The center line tracks well from the abdominals between the breasts but then the sternum appears to be caved in towards the left too much. The result is that the bottom of the torso looks slightly disconnected from the centerline of the collarbones and neck. The way you design hair and braids could use some work as you tend to repeat similarly sized spikes at equal spaces too much. The design would be much stronger if you learned how to incorporate principles of "Small Medium and Large" for both your positive and negative shapes. I would also learn line weighting more as it would make your illustrations feel a bit less cheap.
II) The lighting is a bit wrong. I get the feeling we would see more of the light hitting the left planes of the pectoralis, judging that the deltoid and side of the face are fully lit.
III) Color theory wise you could also do a bit better. Your choice of colors in the shadows feels dull for the skin, and could use more hue variation so it feels less dead.
IV) For the design, I'm not sure the red spikes on her trapezius is supposed to be feathers or fur. Even with just silhouette, shape, and cell shading, I should be able to tell what material it's supposed to be in your design. This lack of material understanding is also apparent in the way you handle the metal on her design as well as being a bit too sparse with some much needed extra drapery folds on her chest to show the tension of the fabric.
Personally I'm not a huge fan of this design, but taste aside I think it will take a few years to improve from points I-IV to the point where you could reliably hope to get income from your work that would exceed what you get from welfare or any entry level wage job. You obviously have some experience, but your execution, character designs, and fundamental understanding still needs further refinement.

Hagström's portfolio on Instragram and Artstation are little better but a lot of the female faces look too masculine and the aforementioned issues also creep into his other drawings.
Mind you, he said he's on welfare so it doesn't look like Kaj is getting getting a mentor or going to a school anytime soon. He will have to grind it out like the rest of us.Getting from /beg/ to /int/ can be relatively short with consistent practice and learning theory. To go from /int/ to /pro/ takes several years of dedicated effort getting specialized feedback especially if you want to make it in a highly competitive saturated market for character art.

I would like to preface Kaj that you are by no means a bad artist. In fact I think you're probably one of the better guys here posting regularly, but that's not a very high bar to begin with. The main problem I see with you is that your portfolio is very scattered and not playing to your strengths and background in physical fitness in the gym.
Your mech and monster/creature designs are the strongest in terms of being useful as a product as many of the things I nitpicked you for are not issues. Robots and demon humanoids can have wacky proportion and lack of lineweight or gesture if being used in pipeline, etc. Weirdly enough, some of your older work is sometimes better than your newer work in terms of this aspects.
I'd say reviewing your work in entirety again, you're several years away from getting work doing female characters on your own, but possibly 1 year away if you took a private class to iron out your proportional issues.
I could see you working for a game that needed jacked monster dudes if you learned how to render in color well, though. They're very sexy.
The best course of action to get hired would probably to double down and make a series of yoked demons and make that your main niche. You can always branch out later.

keep drawing fun the whole time by drawing things you like. focusing on learning isn't fun, you improve faster if you try to maximize fun instead.

Simply having fun while drawing is miles more important than trying to optimize the shit out of a creative hobby as if it's an exact science. Grinding fundamentals to a point where you really only do them can lead to rapid improvement but far more likely it'll lead to burnout and subsequently make another person quit this hobby for good

One way to lessen the pain is to not push yourself to grind past fatigue or even uncomfortable. For example attempting 1 shitty sketch of a body part each day is better than drawing nothing for 6 months. I find most people that suffer and hate the learning process are most likely to be result-oriented and this manifests across any hobby or activity. For this type of person it won't help to try to find some other hobby to avoid the pain in the present because the same suffering will surface in a different form unless that hobby is purely a consumption hobby. I also have this problem. Hate learning, hate the struggle, impatient to a fault, I just want to skip everything and get to the good bits, but the realist in me knows its not possible. So people like us need to find ways to cope or trick ourselves into following the process.
Or don't and just give it up and go back to vidya and jerking off, its just a hobby after all idk.

The only people who say this are people who never do trad. Literally the only advantage trad has is medium texture/friction and maybe the aesthetics of real pencil or paint strokes. From a technical perspective, transform/liquify/layers/clipping layers/changing any fucking color you want at any time to something else/models/etc opens up possibilities impossible with a trad workflow and it's not even close.

The clothing on the torso specifically is the best part of this and reads pretty well. There's lots of places to improve, but be much more careful when working on the face. Those eyebrows specifically are super weird and nearly form a unibrow, and you have a tendency in all of your drawings to make the head/cheek too wide on the foreshortened side of the head

Thank you. This is great. The guy you are replying to isn't me, though.
And yes, I absolutely suck at drawing female faces. It's a complete coinflip if the face turns out good or not.
Line weight is an issue, I'm using a 13-year-old tablet, and it doesn't really register pressure that well. I just got a new tablet for free, but I'm too used to drawing on a monitor that it might take some time until I decide to switch, but after a couple of tests the difference is crazy on the pressure sensitivity.
>Weirdly enough, some of your older work is sometimes better than your newer work in terms of this aspects.
Hard agree. I haven't created anything proper in the last two years. Mostly just practice.
Guess it's back to drawing yoked monsters/demons and practicing drawing females. :) Thanks for taking the time! Great stuff, really appreciate it. Gave me some superb motivation.

You can see it right? The motorcycle reference is much wider and more from the side than in your drawing, its far too compressed. You fucked up the perspective and proportions, try measuring next time you do a photo copy

Anatomy is essentially two things: bone and muscle. That’s it. However as the artist you have tremendous freedom with how you choose to express this. The issue with your drawing is that it lacks the presence of logical anatomical knowledge such as the lack of presence of the neck, symbol drawn shoulders, etc. Try to find a figure drawing teacher that clicks with you stylistically or methodically and go from there by studying their work, how they construct, how they draw body parts; etc
>>
>>7871399
I see, thanks for this. I drew it without reference, which I kind of knew was a terrible idea, but I guess it's helpful sometimes to do a shoddy job and learn from your mistakes. It's definitely highlighted for me that I don't really understand how necks or shoulders work.

It all falls apart when I try to keep track of perspective on all the different features. Like I can construct the basic shape but then be absolute dogshit at the next step. Here I tried to add shading to make myself be more aware of forms but it still looks fucked
>>
>>7871431
Drawing on the Right Side is decent to start, the main thing it will teach is how to observe and replicate what you're seeing. I've heard good things about Keys to Drawing but never done read it myself.
Whatever book or course you do, don't just go through the exercises and call it done. Try to apply the methods to other things, I'd recommend finding an artist that you like and that draws things you'd like to draw and trying to recreate their drawings.

Did the same thing learning guitar and fighting games so i know I have it in me to tough it out. Always wished I was able to draw so I figured its about time I just learn it. and deal with sucking lol.
Should I be drawing the upside down guy everyday? Or like are these books gonna give me things I should be doing/practicing?
I dont know what youd call it but I really like stuff like the picrel. Not just stuff form that card game but whatever that style is, its almost like older painting or something? Idk what youd call it.

Making your "own grid" allows you to cheat a little bit and force the visual angle of your ideas, wich wouldn't work otherwise using precise grid tools.
Like kim Jung Gi did, most of his stuff uses forced made up perspective, cheating your eye to accept that forced angle because it looks appealing.

Bro every single fucking great artist from Renaissance onwards used tools. You are fucking yourself over for no reason.
Da Vinci had an army of actors he used to get every single reference he wanted from any angle he wanted. Now you can have it on the palm of your hand.

>Bro every single fucking great artist from Renaissance onwards used tools
I understand the sentiment but stuff like tracing over 3D models seem like a step beyond things like measuring devices or references
>>7871570
interesting, right now im focusing on just figuring out perspective at a really basic level. My main fear was that using the tool would rob me of the ability to learn how to "intuit" perspective on something small like a single figure drawing. and the main reason i'm even considering the tool is because actually drawing the perspective grid is kicking my ass, i've always been bad at very "technical" drawings with grids and tons of straight lines

Thanks Deer! You can request whatever you want, the problem is that I only use this site, so it has to be a "public" request lol. I don't mess with discord, or any other social. And about the man thing, if it is gay stuff "man on man", I personally avoid drawing that, unless there's some tormenting angle involved lol. Like in the prison story, there will be a lot of man on man "handling" and shit, but not gay intercourse. I did a quickie for you on picrel.

Thank you Monka!!! Yeah, probably I may be using other artists styles. I already admitted that I try to copy Roninsong, and Balsamique's styles, also there's another French artist, that I can't remember his name, but I take cues from whatever artist I find even if he did just a few pieces, I take something from it lol

Your designs and line work are AMAZING. Now the way you color it, it makes it really hard to see the design, it is one blob of color.. Maybe if you de-saturate that blue the design can shine as it should. Usually de-saturating colors always works as a "quick fix"

What's a good way to learn to draw figures? I'm doing boxes/cylinders and got okay at them, I can make it look believable enough, I'm doing some gesture as well in addition to just drawing/doodling.
I want to be able to draw realistic and stylized figures eventually... Is it just learning values/anatomy and then going at it?
>>
>>7871674
All in Krita. "Pencil-2 Large 4b" at the start, then switched over to "ink gpen 25" for later linework and hatching (good way to also train pressure control)
For shading and color, i used the same ink gpen to draw the outline then magicwand->grow selection and then filled it.
For the melting shadows, i drew the shape with the same pen then used "Basic mix Soft" set to the base value/greyscale so it blends the shadows to the base value.
Did values first, then experimented with color HSI over the values to get the colors i wanted for the final few.

I just kinda slapped some colors down and eyeballed a composition then I carved some people out of it. I like the poses and colors, but the ground feels empty. I don't want to add too many hard lines or objects as I want to keep the ethereal feeling, so I'm thinking like a pattern or texture. Are there any glaring mistakes that anybody can see before I start to get into a rough draft phase?

I try to vary the width of the lines; the contour lines of the silhouette and those against the light are thicker, while the lines of folds in clothing and strands of hair are thin. Intersections of lines also tend to be thicker at the point where they meet.
But really, I only improved my linework significantly after I started studying manga/doujin pages in the original full resolution(like picrel)

I love the creepy lifeless gaze of dolls, as a kid I would fantasize about being locked in a gypsy wagon full of those creepy old dolls, so I don't think I'll stop studying them any time soon.

Pretty solid mech, the only thing I would recommend if you are trying to make it look like its covered in rust/corrosion spots is to maybe use more red, orange and yellow tones or greens (like in bronze or brass), otherwise it just looks like it has shit smeared on.
Maybe also play with textures or add broken off, damaged bits around those areas like in pic related. Hope that helps.

Cool premise! Though I think those characters should look much more "seasoned" and rough to look the part. That seems to be a suicide mission, they look young and inexperienced.. Maybe they don't know what they're getting into... See?, I'm already getting myself immersed into the plot.. lol

As a fellow dollfag I feel like you could include the physical feature of doll eyes being set back in their head to really emphasize the doll eyes. I think there's some ambiguity to your stuff because the pupils are so doll-like but the rest of the face doesn't quite share that level of stylization, which makes it unclear whether it's intentional or not.

I think i got the base rough figured out for the most part. It turns out i was subconsciously doing a kind of 4 point perspective because it felt right but I didn't realize it until I was like hmm, this all feels awfully aligned. So I guess before I get into the rough, it's time to put my construction and perspective to the test and do a rough overlay that is in alignment with the perspective. I'm gonna fucking kms but im pretty proud of how this is coming out so far.

I really like how you did the clouds.
But a lot of the composition was lost. The trees are all similar sizes, and the hills are flattened into two sets of distances. Because of those changes the sense of depth is less.

For regular people, maybe. They may look young, but don't judge a book by it's cover. When you see them in action you'll get it. Also, cool drawing! Her Lichihara, but the other call her Chi-Chi!

added another follow to the list of artists I like. once again I am shown that good artists are NOT bound by style. they have a core skillset that allows them to draw however they feel like. this is why when people ask "post art you'd like yours to be" it stunlocks me. I will never reach this level of freedom

Hello again, so this is day 3 for me. Working through the Drawing Brain book and these were the last two things I did. Idk if this is how you normally draw but the book has you draw when youre looking at the subject and you only look at the image to check the scale and stuff. I wasn't told to shade them but I figured I'd try since I haven't done it before. Anyways is there any kind of drill or anything I can do while working through this book? Any kind of practice I can start on now that ill be happy I did later? Thanks again for the help and suggestions.

Its fine, its all in good fun lol. If a little bit of shit talk was enough to get me to quit I'd probably have stopped after the book told me to draw a self portrait at the very beginning and it looked like something a preschooler would draw lol. Destroyed me ego. Someone who actually draws will give me some advice at some point I hope. I just think theres probably like daily stuff I should be doing for some long term gains.

don't read that book. it's not good at all. you're reading that stupid old Stinky right? don't
start with fun with pencil then keys to drawing or Proko beginner course you can find it in course thread search it. then copy morpho simplified anatomy like 100 times.

>>

No the book is actually pretty good. It definitely has helped me already. I have seen a lot of people saying its antiquated and a waste of time, but ive been helped enough by it that im gonna stick it out and finish it. Anything is better than when I started. Ill definitely check those things out after though. Thanks anon.
>>7872712
If thats the case then it doesnt matter anyways right? It can either be good fun, or its pointless bitter people just sucking lol. Either way I dont take stuff like that to heart. Gotta keep your head up bro and keep drawing.

I don't know if there's a way to draw the left, nose obscured eye better though. Looks way jumbled the longer you look at it. Any tips?
>>
If I post my drawing right now, the thread will last for an hour or so in that uncertain state where everybody knows we'll get new thread but not right now so nobody posts anything serious and when the new thread is created it's too awkward to repost my pic because it was there for more than an hour and nobody replied to it.

Made another project from KtD
Not sure why the author recommends contour drawing, while I constantly hear and read about doing construction while drawing people. I end up erasing and restating a look to get correct proportions. I think the end result looks passable, but I still managed to get certain things wrong and, to be fair, those drawings don't really look like the references. There are also issues like the nose being too small or back of the head being too far.
Thoughts?

Any decent guides for drawing clothes from a reference drawing? I am decent-ish at nude figure drawing, but it becomes very hard for me to visualize the form underneath when baggy clothes are added on top. Most references I can find online seem obsessed with folds and not actually constructing clothes on top of a figure.

I tried to draw a circle for a head first but I don't think it really helped in any way.

I wanted to make it a little bit better with some colors, turns out I don't understand those in digital either, no idea why they turn out so weird, some brushed need insane pressure to be visible, others are too dark even normally. Maybe I should just buy some colored pencils

>>
>>7872986
Check brush settings, it's easiest to lay down flats using as plain a brush as possible, no opacity variance, no textures. That should be the base colors and then you can use a new layer to add your shading. Don't get discouraged when brushes or tools don't work how you like, the advantage of digital is how easy it is to undo a mistake and try again.

Because some people think anybody is slightly androgynous is latently transexual or homosexual. This also isn't exclusive to zoomers as you see things like this said by many rightoids. Behavior that's more telling of the accusers than the accusees. Say what you will, but at least zoomers are more honest about their proclivities. Many rightoids are deeply deeply closeted homosexuals.

Twink doesn't necessarily mean gay, but it doesn't mean unmasculine man. It refers to boyish looking men, who may or may not be feminine or gay, with lithe bodies and young features. not just any random young guy

Reminds me of art I would see in DnD social spheres and other nerd rp shit back in the days. Muted and nothing fancy but serviceable.
I would compare it to mini painting where you want it to be clear and look good and not too laborious but nothing extravagant.
Same for the inking. It is very heavy but good and varied just like old 40K art.
